I found this article in Spirit of change magazine and just had to share a funny story.
Growing up I was a kid of divorce, so every weekend I would go off to my dad and step mothers house. One day we were drinking tea in the “Red Tea Room” (yes it was that type of house where rooms had names and spices were alphabetically organized). My dad was playing along very nicely but just couldn’t keep his humor to himself. He was a laughable jolly fellow that lived to get a rise out of people. As I was taking a big sip of my very prestigious and kind of icky tea my dad said something very funny and I couldn’t contain my laughter. Seriously, I just couldn’t stop laughing and I sprayed tea all over the RED VELVET couch, mini sandwiches and porcelain flower arrangement so perfectly set in the center of the table. That was it I was in big trouble now, but to my surprise my step mother and dad started to hysterically laugh. For the next 20 minutes there was roaring laughter among the soggy sandwiches. That was a great memory!
Today is January 21st 2012 AKA “the first real snow storm of the New England season”. I wanted to post a quick few tips for you while you are out there shoveling or snow blowing your driveways, or perhaps even a random act of kindness’s driveway. This is for those who plow as well, sometimes you do get out and shovel a few front door steps. These snow shoveling preventative stretches and tips will aid in a healthy back this winter season.
Tip #1 ~ Heat
Have a heating pack ready for the taking, either an electric one or one that can be brought with you in the plow truck. (Put them in a small cooler and put in next to you in the passenger’s seat). Don’t have a heating pad? Grab a large bath towel, run it under warm water, ring it out and put it in the microwave for 5-6 minutes on high. (Use common sense here, more or less time may be needed). It will be hot when you take it out so best to use a dry towel or oven mitt. fold the towel into a square shape and wrap it with a thin dry towel. VOILA, instant FREE heating pad. Note that the smaller the towel the shorter length of time the heat will last.
Tip #2 ~ Stretch
BEFORE you venture out into the big bad world just give your legs and torso a few stretches (60-90 seconds). You could even run in a place for 20-30 seconds. You will be doing quite a bit of bending today and don’t want to send that beautiful back of yours into spasm.
Diagonal spinal twist
AFTER you have completed your shoveling job, stripped of all your cold wet clothes and hung them up for the next time you will venture out, lay on the floor and do this diagonal spinal twist stretch as seen in the picture to the right. Bring your leg over to one side and stretch out your opposite arm palm side up. As I always say, time is more important than strength. Don’t force the stretch, this may actually send you INTO a spasm, no no no! Hold each stretch for at least 90 seconds if not 2 minutes, repeat on each side twice.
Tip#3~ Trigger point work
Using a tennis ball to get at all those sore areas in between your shoulder blades and low back region works great, a self care tool like the Theracane and Thumbby are BETTER and more effective. You can purchase those two tools in my office. If you do not have either one of those very useful and amazing tools then stick to the tennis balls. Check out the video below.
It’s a snowy Saturday out there folks, I’ll be snow blowing my L O N G driveway. One key trick to a healthy back during snow shoveling season is to keep a hot pack ready and your local massage therapists phone number on speed dial! Last year at this time quite a few calls came in. I typically will open my office for emergency appointments before and after regular hours a few days after a storm. Just another perk for all of our clientele. Have fun out there! Happy shoveling, sledding, snow blowing, snow angle-making and hot chocolate drinking!
Contact Relaxation Works today to book your appointment or purchase a self care tool. Both are worth their weight in “wet snow” gold.

There have been many first this year, like learning how to bill for auto injury insurance, how to provide detailed progress reports to other health care providers and a renewed found love for hospice care massage. I have chosen some fantastic business features to ring in 2012 and traveled to some lovely places. I have discovered some great business, wellness and cooking blogs. I got to chat with many great massage therapist.

Prices have changed to reflect my current professional background and therapeutic massage techniques.
New high quality massage therapists are on the horizon as we speak to join the team of Relaxation Works so same day appointments can be accommodated.
New self-care tools have adorned the retail area.
There have been some great blog posted written for YOU about self-care, massage and policies.
A brand NEW membership program has been put in place and package deals have been retired.
I had a stellar year with defining my ideal client (is that you!?).
There was a pretty nice write up in Taunton Daily Gazette about how I build my business with just 5 clients after I was laid off from a corporate job of more than 6 years.
Personally I have made it through “the year of sacrifice” as I say it time and time again to my friends and family. Creating a business from nothing does test friendships and relationships. Change can breakdown relationships of all levels so they may grow, expand and flourish. Lots of exciting hours were spent sitting down in front of my computer typing out future plans, blog posts and marketing ideas to get RW out into the community and a great on-line presence. I have lost a very dear and close person in my life in October of 2011, my step mother that battles cancer for almost 10 years. I have encouraged my autistic step-son to be the best he can be and learned PATIENTS, love and understanding that today we will do the best we can do and tomorrow is a NEW DAY! I have soared past fearful obstacle, challenging business situations and have seen immense growth in how I run my business. I have the MOST AMAZING CLIENTELE I could ever hope, dream, ask and pray for! I have learned that who I was in the past is not the person I WILL be in the future. You have allowed me to experience freedom, honor, pride in my work and believe in the work I provide through each massage session.
If the Beatles didn’t do it for you, maybe Peanut Butter and Jelly will! HAPPY BIRTHDAY RELAXATION WORKS and CLIENTS, you deserve a shimmy and a shake!
